Only Use Registered Desiccants for Cereals
Tip #2: Always Read and Follow the Label
Protect Market Access and Manage Residues
Protecting the quality and global reputation of Canadian wheat, barley and oats begins with making the right choices close to harvest. Keep it Clean reminds growers to only use registered desiccants and strictly adhere to label rates.
Using the wrong product on cereals is an off-label use. This is not only illegal but can result in residue detections in markets where MRLs may be absent or low.
Make sure to follow the label when using registered desiccants to ensure your crops meet the strict requirements of domestic and export customers.
Keeping Markets Open
Shipments of Canadian grain are regularly tested for pesticide residues along the supply chain. Using a product not registered for cereal grains, or using a registered product incorrectly, can result in residues that exceed Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs). This can lead to rejected shipments, loss of market access and damage to Canada’s reputation.
Following these best management practices ensures that your desiccation timing and product selection align with global market requirements:
Choose the Right Product
It is essential to distinguish between desiccation (crop and weed dry down) and pre-harvest weed control. Using the wrong product can lead to residue levels that exceed international limits.
It’s important to remember:
- Targeted Desiccation: Use products which are registered as desiccants to rapidly dry out green material.
- Avoid Non-Registered Products: While diquat and glufosinate-ammonium may be applied on other crops, they are not registered for use on wheat, barley or oats. Their use can lead to “zero-tolerance” residue detections in export markets.
- The Glyphosate Distinction: Glyphosate is a systemic herbicide for perennial weed control, not a desiccant. It should also only be applied according to label directions.
Follow the Label
Applying a product “off label” is the fastest way to jeopardize a shipment. Label rates are calibrated to ensure the product performs while ensuring residues are reduced to safe levels before the grain reaches the elevator.
Keep it Clean reminds growers to
- Follow the Rate: Applying above the label rate increases the risk of detectable residues.
- Follow the Timing: Apply crop protection products only at the recommended crop stage, to ensure efficacy and residues remain predictable.
- Follow the PHI: The Pre-Harvest Interval (PHI) is the legal minimum time required between spraying and harvesting a crop. Do not swathe or straight-cut early.
Check Your Grain Contract
Even if a product is registered, some buyers may have restrictions (e.g., malt barley), including actives on the Product Advisory. Always consult your grain buyer before application.
By sticking to registered products for desiccation, you help provide assurance that Canadian cereals are produced and harvested safely.
